Spiritual
Strength
Ever wonder
why a tragic event such as the death of a child will destroy
one family but unite another? One facet that contributes to
how people respond to stressful events is their spiritual
strength. Spiritual strength can help you get through even
the most stressful times in life. Many people are able to
release stress by handing their worries over to a higher power.
Faith or trust in a supreme being also helps people cope with
events that cause grief and loss, such as the death of a loved
one.
Nurturing
your spiritual commitment can be part of your stress management
plan. Here are some approaches that have been helpful for
many other people. You can adapt some of these or find ways
of your own:
- Read
from the Bible, Torah, or other sacred writings looking
for principles and insights for life.
- Become
acquainted with the thoughts and teaching of great people
and spiritual leaders (for example, Martin Luther King,
Mother Teresa, Buddha, Thomas Aquinas, Mohammed, Mahatma
Gandhi, Confucius, Billy Graham, C.S. Lewis).
- Spend
a little quiet time each day in prayer, meditation, or contemplation.
- Learn
what it means to love by caring for a child or helping those
unable to help themselves.
- Talk
about ways to grow spiritually with a friend, pastor, priest,
rabbi, or other spiritual leader you trust and admire.
- Find
a group and meet regularly with people of similar belief
who are committed to spiritual development.
- Be
open to the inner voice of life that speaks harmony, kindness,
and caring toward others.
The spiritual
dimension can help you integrate and prioritize life's components
to achieve a full, rewarding, low-stress life.
