Physical Activity and Risk of Endometrial Cancer

Risk of endometrial cancer is linked to increased body weight in women. A new study shows that women who exercise regularly have a lower risk of endometrial cancer. The study is based on a population case-controlled study including 472 newly diagnosed women with endometrial cancer compared to 443 controls without endometrial cancer.

Researchers divided women into 3 groups based on their lifetime physical activity level – most active (top third) to least active (bottom third). Women who were most active and got regular moderate physical activity had less than half the risk (56 percent decreased risk) of endometrial cancer compared to the least active group.

Women who benefited the most from regular physical activity were those who were overweight and had the highest risk of cancer. The authors summarized their report, "These findings suggest that physical activity in adulthood, even of moderate intensity, may be effective in lowering the risk of endometrial cancer, particularly among those at highest risk for this disease."
